Most online wool blanket guides are written by people who have never owned one. We've been in the wool blanket business since 1996 — first selling authentic Swiss Army surplus, then building our own Classic Wool line when the originals sold out worldwide. This is the guide we wish existed when customers ask us, over the phone, the questions below.
What's the difference between a military surplus wool blanket and a reproduction wool blanket?
A military surplus wool blanket is the real thing — government-issued, woven decades ago, then released to the surplus market when militaries upgraded or downsized. A reproduction is a newly-made blanket designed to faithfully recreate the look, feel, and weight of a famous military original.
Both have a place. Surplus blankets are the affordable workhorse — inexpensive, rugged, and carrying real history. Reproductions are the move when you want the iconic look (the Swiss cross, the Italian officer's star, the Navy stripes) in a brand-new blanket without hunting down a 50-year-old original. The only wool blankets you should be wary of are reproductions that pretend to be surplus. We label ours clearly either way.
What happened to genuine Swiss Army wool blankets — can you still buy them?
Genuine, government-issued Swiss Army wool blankets are essentially gone from the global surplus market. Swiss Link sold authentic Swiss Army blankets for roughly two decades — they were the blanket that built our reputation — and we eventually sold the last of the worldwide supply. The Swiss military moved on, the warehouses emptied, and the originals haven't come back.
That's the reason our Classic Wool line exists. We weren't trying to start a blanket brand. We were watching the original disappear and watching every cheap "Swiss-style" copy on the market fall short of it. So we built our own — the Swiss Army Classic Wool Blanket | Reproduction — to be the worthy successor.
Where are Swiss Link Classic Wool blankets made, and why?
Our Classic Wool blankets are made in India. That surprises some customers, so the honest answer matters: India has one of the world's deepest traditions of wool blanket weaving, and the mill partners we work with source high-quality wool and employ craftsmen who have been making heavyweight wool blankets for generations. We tested manufacturers in multiple countries before settling on the partner we use today, and the quality came back, every time, from the same place.
Why are Swiss Link wool blankets 80% wool instead of 100%?
The 80/20 blend is the result of a long product-development process. A 100% wool blanket can feel coarse, can be more prone to shrinkage in a home wash, and doesn't always drape the way customers want for couch and bed use. Our 80/20 keeps everything you actually want from wool — warmth, flame resistance, moisture management, longevity — while adding the soft hand-feel and washability people want from a blanket they're going to live with daily.
The other 20% is a recycled mixed-fiber blend — primarily reclaimed cotton, polyester, and post-industrial recycled wool. That's not a corner we cut; it's a sustainability choice we made on purpose.
What makes the Swiss Link Swiss Army Reproduction better than other Swiss-style wool blankets?
There are a lot of "Swiss Army style" blankets online. Most are thin, scratchy, screen-printed, and don't hold up after two washes. Ours is built differently:
- The 80/20 blend we spent years dialing in — heavyweight feel, soft hand.
- Heavyweight construction — roughly 4.5 lbs of blanket at 60" × 80", matching the substance of the original issue blanket rather than the lightweight knockoffs.
- Quality stitching on every edge and seam — these are blankets you'll hand down, not replace.
- Strong, lasting colors — the red stripes stay red, the white cross stays white, no fade after wash cycle 10.
- A soft touch right out of the package — no break-in scratch period.
What can you actually use a wool blanket for?
Four use cases cover almost every customer we ship to:
- Bushcraft, camping & bedrolls. Wool is the original outdoor-sleeping textile for a reason — it insulates when wet, doesn't melt near sparks, and lasts decades of hard ground use.
- Couch throws and home decor. The Plaid Collection and the retro-striped Classics (Dream Season, Arctic Shawl, Harbor Dawn) were designed for this — cabin and lodge aesthetic without sacrificing function.
- Emergency, car kits, and preparedness. A wool blanket in the trunk has kept more people alive in winter breakdowns than any single piece of gear we sell. Stays warm when wet, flame-resistant, packs into a duffel.
- Picnics, tailgates, and stadium use. The Classic Wool Picnic Blanket adds a waterproof backing for ground use; the standard Classics are perfect for stadium seating.
Why choose wool over a fleece or synthetic blanket?
Wool wins on every metric that actually matters when conditions get serious:
- Wool stays warm when wet. Fleece and most synthetics lose most of their insulation value once they're soaked. Wool keeps insulating.
- Wool is naturally flame-resistant. It chars and self-extinguishes instead of melting. Fleece melts and sticks to skin — a real hazard around campfires.
- Wool doesn't shed microplastics. Every wash of a fleece blanket sends plastic fiber into the water system. Wool is biodegradable.
- Wool lasts. Properly cared for, a wool blanket is a decades-long purchase, not a season-long one.
- Wool naturally resists odor and bacteria. It needs washing far less often than synthetics, which means less wear, more lifespan.
How do you wash a Swiss Link wool blanket?
Care is simple, and yes — our Classic Wool blankets are machine-washable:
- Cold water. Always.
- Gentle cycle. Skip the heavy-duty setting.
- Air dry. Lay flat or hang. Skip the dryer.
Avoid bleach and fabric softener. A mild detergent or a wool-specific wash like Woolite is fine, but not required for the 80/20 blend.
Should I buy a military surplus wool blanket or a Swiss Link Classic Wool blanket?
Here's our honest take, written by people who sell both:
Buy genuine military surplus — like our Canadian D.N.D. wool blanket — when you want a great inexpensive wool blanket with real military history, and you don't mind a more utilitarian look. Surplus wool blankets are fantastic, and every household should own at least one.
Buy a Swiss Link Classic Wool blanket when you want something exceptionally good-looking and high quality — a blanket that holds its own on the couch, on the bed, or as a gift. Ours beat any military blanket on appearance, hand-feel, and stitching quality. And compared to the high-end heritage wool brands charging $200–$400, ours start at $59.99.
What's the best Swiss Link wool blanket for a first-time buyer?
If you want one blanket that captures the whole brand story, get the Swiss Army Classic Wool Reproduction — it's the blanket the whole line was built around. If you want something more home-decor focused, the Pumpkin Spice Plaid and Arctic Shawl are perennial favorites. If you're outfitting a household or gifting, the Military Collection 4-pack bundle is the best value we offer.
