What is the difference between Issued and Unissued Military Surplus?
Unissued Military Surplus (also known as New Old Stock or NOS) refers to gear that was manufactured for a military contract but never distributed to soldiers. It is essentially brand-new gear that has been in long-term storage. Issued Gear has been distributed to a soldier and used in the field or during training, meaning it will show varying degrees of wear.
Does Grade 2 Military Surplus still work?
Yes. At Swiss Link, Grade 2 ("#2 Condition") surplus is still functional for its intended purpose. While it may have professional repairs, heavy fading, missing buttons or zippers, we do not sell gear that is structurally compromised or broken unless explicitly stated for "parts only." It is the best choice for budget-conscious hikers and laborers.
Why does some Army Navy gear have a specific "warehouse" smell?
That distinct aroma is actually a sign of quality storage. Most European Military Surplus was treated with moth-proofing agents and preservatives to protect wool and canvas from rot while stored in underground bunkers. This scent is temporary and can be removed by airing the item outside or using a vinegar-based wash.
Is "Deadstock" the same as Military Surplus?
In the vintage and fashion world, Deadstock Military is another term for Unissued Surplus. It refers to authentic, vintage military items that were never sold or worn, making them highly collectible for those looking for pristine, historically accurate gear.
