The Ultimate Guide to Military Surplus Grading & Conditions

Buying authentic military surplus online shouldn't feel like a gamble. At Swiss Link, we prioritize transparency because we know that 'battle-proven' gear has a story. Whether it sat in a Swiss bunker for 40 years or saw active duty on the front lines, this guide ensures you know exactly what’s arriving at your door.

This guide explains our grading system so you know exactly what’s arriving at your door.

1. Unissued (New Old Stock / NOS)

Unissued gear is "New Old Stock." This means the item was manufactured for a military contract, delivered to a warehouse, and stayed there until we bought it.

  • Condition: Mint to near-mint.
  • Expect: No signs of wear, original factory folds, and occasionally original hangtags or packaging.
  • Note: Because it has been stored for decades, it may have a "warehouse scent" or light dust (easily solved with a quick wash).
  • Best For: Collectors, gift-giving, and those who want "factory-fresh" durability.

2. Issued (Grade 1 / Light Use)

Battle-Ready and Field-Proven. This is gear that was issued to a soldier but seen very little "dirt time." It is 100% functional and structurally sound.

  • Condition: Good.
  • Expect: Light fading, a soldier’s name written on the interior tag, or minor scuffs on hardware (buttons/zippers).
  • Pro Tip: This is the best value for hikers and campers who want high-performance gear at a fraction of civilian retail prices.
  • Best For: Camping, hiking, and everyday rugged wear.

3. "#2" Condition (Field Grade / B-Grade)

The Budget-Friendly Workhorse. Grade 2 gear has "character." These items have seen honest use in training or deployments. They may need small repairs.

  • Condition: "#2 Condition"
  • Expect: Professional repairs (patches), heavy fading, small snags, stains, or missing buttons or zippers.
  • Why buy it? It’s perfect for "beater" gear, DIY projects, or rugged work where you don't want to worry about the first scratch.
  • Best For: High-intensity work gear, DIY projects, and the best "bang for your buck.

What is the difference between Issued and Unissued Military Surplus?

Unissued Military Surplus (also known as New Old Stock or NOS) refers to gear that was manufactured for a military contract but never distributed to soldiers. It is essentially brand-new gear that has been in long-term storage. Issued Gear has been distributed to a soldier and used in the field or during training, meaning it will show varying degrees of wear.

Does Grade 2 Military Surplus still work?

Yes. At Swiss Link, Grade 2 ("#2 Condition") surplus is still functional for its intended purpose. While it may have professional repairs, heavy fading, missing buttons or zippers, we do not sell gear that is structurally compromised or broken unless explicitly stated for "parts only." It is the best choice for budget-conscious hikers and laborers.

Why does some Army Navy gear have a specific "warehouse" smell?

That distinct aroma is actually a sign of quality storage. Most European Military Surplus was treated with moth-proofing agents and preservatives to protect wool and canvas from rot while stored in underground bunkers. This scent is temporary and can be removed by airing the item outside or using a vinegar-based wash.

Is "Deadstock" the same as Military Surplus?

In the vintage and fashion world, Deadstock Military is another term for Unissued Surplus. It refers to authentic, vintage military items that were never sold or worn, making them highly collectible for those looking for pristine, historically accurate gear.
