Origin of Camouflage

German Flecktarn

Adopted by the Bundeswehr in the early 90s, the Flecktarn pattern became a standard issue for German troops as part of the newly introduced five-color camouflage system. Developed during the 1970s camouflage trials known as Truppenversuch 76, Flecktarn was optimized for European woodland terrain and quickly proved effective in concealment.

The pattern served throughout the 1990s and 2000s across the German Army and NATO deployments, becoming an iconic piece of Cold War–era gear. Beyond its military roots, the Flecktarn pattern has since gained cultural recognition—valued by collectors, outdoorsmen, and even streetwear fashion for its unique aesthetic and historical importance.
