Origin of Camouflage
British MTP
The British Multi-Terrain Pattern (MTP), introduced in 2010, replaced the long-serving DPM as the UK’s standard camouflage. Developed during the Afghanistan War, it combines the proven colour palette of Crye Precision’s MultiCam with the familiar shape elements of British DPM, creating a hybrid design optimized for both arid and woodland terrain. First issued to troops in Helmand Province, it quickly phased into general service and was incorporated into the modern Personal Clothing System (PCS) uniform cut.
MTP became the visual identity of the British Armed Forces in the post-Cold War era, serving across NATO and UN missions worldwide. Its versatility reduced the need for multiple seasonal uniforms, while still maintaining compatibility with allied forces using MultiCam. Today, surplus MTP uniforms are highly sought after by collectors and outdoors enthusiasts alike, both for their functional design and their role in marking the end of Britain’s four-decade run with DPM.
