Origin of Camouflage
British Desert DPM
British Desert DPM (Disruptive Pattern Material) was created in the late 1980s as a response to the need for effective camouflage in arid environments, especially after British involvement increased in the Middle East. Its earliest version—a four-color desert rendering of standard DPM—was sold abroad and only tested by UK special forces, but during the First Gulf War, a new two-color "sand and brown" Desert DPM became standard issue for British troops.
Desert DPM featured swirling tan and brown shapes adapted from woodland DPM, and over the 1990s and 2000s, it clothed British Army, Royal Marines, and Royal Air Force personnel in the Gulf, Iraq, Afghanistan, and peacekeeping deployments across arid regions. With its distinctive look and proven performance, Desert DPM was widely copied by allied nations before being replaced by the Multi-Terrain Pattern (MTP) in the 2010s, but it remains an iconic symbol of Britain’s overseas operations in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
