The "Woobie" is widely regarded as one of the most versatile pieces of field gear issued to U.S. troops. Originally designed during the Vietnam War as a lighter, faster-drying alternative to the standard wool blanket, this specific model features the Universal Camouflage Pattern (ACU/UCP).
Construction & Materials
- Outer Shell: 100% Ripstop Nylon. The tight "Oxford" weave is designed to resist tearing and withstand rough field use.
- Insulation: 100% Polyester batting. This synthetic fill retains warmth even when damp and allows the blanket to dry significantly faster than natural fibers.
- Quilting: Features wavy or "zigzag" quilted stitching to prevent the internal batting from shifting or bunching over time.
- Binding: The edges are finished with a rolled nylon binding to prevent fraying and tattering.
Technical Dimensions
- Standard Size: Approximately 82 inches by 62 inches (approx. 5' x 7').
- Weight: Approximately 1.3 to 1.5 lbs, making it highly portable for backpacking or emergency kits.
- NSN (National Stock Number): 8405-01-547-2559 (Standard ACU version).
Key Features & Functionality
- Tie-Downs: It includes eight sets of nylon tie-strings located at the corners and mid-points. These are designed to secure the liner to the grommets of a standard military rain poncho, effectively turning the combination into a lightweight sleeping bag.
- No Head Hole: Unlike the poncho it attaches to, the liner does not have a hole in the center. This allows it to function as a traditional rectangular blanket.
- Water Resistance: While not waterproof, the nylon shell is naturally water-resistant, shedding light moisture and resisting wind chill.
- Versatility: Beyond its primary use as a poncho liner, it is commonly used as a standalone blanket, a sleeping bag liner for extra warmth, a ground cover, or a cushioned equipment wrap.
