Origin of Camouflage
Romanian M94 Mozaic
Introduced in 1994, Romania’s M94 Mozaic camouflage—often nicknamed “Fleck” for its resemblance to German Flecktarn—was developed as a modernization effort following the bold leaf-style M90 pattern. Featuring a mosaic of green, brown, and black spots on a khaki-green base, it provided effective concealment in Europe’s mixed woodland terrain. During the mid-1990s, it became standard issue across the Romanian Army and was worn alongside M90 uniforms, marking a transitional phase in Romania’s post-Cold War military identity.
The M94 remained in use through the late 1990s and into the early 2000s, seeing service on domestic duties, training exercises, and peacekeeping operations before Romania standardized on a DPM-inspired pattern in 2002. Though retired from active service, the M94 lives on in surplus markets where its distinctive flecked design and Cold War-era roots make it a favorite among collectors, reenactors, and outdoor enthusiasts looking for rare European camouflage.
