Origin of Camouflage

Romanian M90

Introduced in 1990, the Romanian M90 “Leaf” camouflage represented the country’s first nationally standardized pattern following decades of using Soviet-inspired designs and local variants dating back to the 1960s. Characterized by finely detailed green, brown, and black leaf shapes over a khaki or sandy background, the M90 provided Romanian soldiers with a visually distinctive woodland appearance, though similar leaf designs were common elsewhere in Eastern Europe.

The M90 field jacket and other garments became widely issued to infantry, mechanized units, and various branches throughout the 1990s. In 2002, Romania transitioned to NATO-style DPM camouflage, retiring the M90 patterns from active service as part of modernization efforts. Today, surplus M90 jackets are appreciated by collectors and outdoors enthusiasts for their durable cotton construction, Cold War-era look, and practical design.
