Dutch Cold Weather MVP Cap | Issued
This is the Dutch Military "MVP" Cold Weather Cap. "MVP" stands for Moisture Vapour Permeable, which is the military's term for a waterproof but breathable fabric (similar to Gore-Tex).
The Basics
- Design: A "trapper" or "arctic" style field cap with a short brim and integrated ear flaps.
- Materials: The outer shell uses the MVP membrane to keep rain and snow out while letting sweat escape. The inside is lined with soft, insulating fleece.
- Ear Flaps: These are the key feature. They can be worn folded up over the top of the hat or pulled down to cover your ears and the back of your neck. Most versions use Velcro or a chin strap to secure them.
- Brim/Peak: Usually features a short, semi-rigid or "wired" brim that can be shaped to keep water away from your face without blocking your vision.
What to Expect
- Weatherproofing: Unlike a standard wool beanie, this is windproof and water-resistant. It’s designed specifically for "wet-cold" environments where staying dry is as important as staying warm.
- Fit: It has a low-profile crown, meaning it isn't bulky on top. It was designed to be worn comfortably under a combat helmet if necessary.
- Condition: These are issued surplus. You may find names written on the inner labels or minor fading, but the MVP material is built for high-durability field use.
Quick Tip: If you are between sizes, go slightly larger. Because of the fleece lining and the non-stretch MVP fabric, these can feel a bit tighter than a standard baseball cap.
